Supported Housing
We offer over 50 units of short term and long term accommodation to people with mental health problems.
Properties are owned by either the local authority or by Jephson Housing Association, but are furnished, decorated and managed by Sandwell Mind.
Visiting support from STR workers is funded through the government’s ‘Supporting People’ scheme. In almost all cases this is provided free of charge to the user. Our supported housing service covers three types of accommodation:
Gharana: A clustered collection of 13 self contained flats in Smethwick, targeted specifically at meeting the needs of the Asian community. This is a short term project aimed at helping users learn or regain the skills needed to move on to more independent living within a 2 year timeframe.
The Willows: A 6 bed group home in West Bromwich where users have their own bedroom but share the other facilities communally. The Willows works to a similar 2 year timeframe as Gharana. There are plans to redevelop the service in the near future with a new build of 10 self contained clustered flats in Hill Top due to replace the existing group home.
Dispersed Flats: 33 self contained flats dispersed throughout the borough. Although STR input is focussed on promoting recovery and independence the support can be provided long term, for as long as needs warrant it.
The Supported Housing team works 7 days a week, including bank holidays. There is an on call system provided for out of hours emergencies.
