SORT - Floating Support

Sandwell Mind Outreach and Recovery Team (or 'SORT' for short) is a floating support service working with over 177 people across the borough of Sandwell. Our STR workers visit users in their own homes, supporting them in practical ways so they can successfully manage their own mental health problems and maintain their place in the community.

We aim to move people on to greater independence and enable them to move off the service within a two year timeframe. There is no charge for this service, it is funded by the government's 'Supporting People' scheme.

SORT offers 'housing related support'. This often involves helping someone with budgeting, benefits claims, form filling, household management, domestic or daily living skills and so on. However it can also involve helping someone to access social, leisure or educational facilities, to attend appointments, or to broaden their own support network.

Whatever form our input takes it will always be focused on helping the person to stay well, to maintain their place in the community, to become more independent, and to enagage positively with the wider society.

We usually work fairly closely with statutory mental health services - people like CPN's, social workers etc - so our support may be part of a larger package and the STR worker may not be the only person working with the service user.

SORT cannot offer any kind of personal care, such as assistance with washing or dressing or administering medication - we are not funded to do this and our staff are not trained to do this. Nor can we offer any direct financial assistance other than helping users to obtain their full income entitlement.

Referrals are welcomed from any source, including self referrals. Contact the service manager Gary Middleton at Bradfield House on 0121 543 3931 for further information.
